I'm not as young as I used to be....

My morning started pretty early. Faith didn't want to miss any of the royal wedding, so she had me up by 5:20am. I loved the wedding, especially Kate's dress. Although I have to admit that I can't remember ever seeing in her in an unflattering outfit. I thought the best part was that Kate is 29, which made me feel young, unlike watching baseball and realizing that the player was born in 1988.

At about 8am, I left to go for my run. I drove over to Piney Point (where my marathon last month was held). It was so beautiful today.

My view for most of the run
I ran down St. George's Island and then down the Piney Point Lighthouse. I felt great for the beginning and I took a Gu at mile 6. I got chased by 3 dogs after that, so I had a fast mile in there too. Score one for inconsiderate dog ownership.

At mile 8, I passed by the car again so I refilled my water. I was still feeling fine at this point. Around mile 10, my left ankle started hurting. I have experienced this once before (during my botched 20 miler for marathon training), so I was left with a conundrum. Keep running and hope the pain/discomfort subsides, or cut the run short to avoid a serious injury? I tried to keep going, but the pain was getting worse, so I ended the run at 13.1 (I didn't plan that, it just happened).
This is where it hurts

13.1 in 1:57 (8:59 average)
I have no idea what is wrong. I'm icing it right now and I'm trying to not be too pissed about cutting my run short. I really can't afford to get injured, especially with my 50K 5 weeks away. I also can't really afford to miss any long runs either. I'm more pissed at myself for being a wimp last week, because there was nothing wrong then and if I had gotten a longer run then, I'd be less concerned right now.

My plan is to take it easy and ice today and then try a short run tomorrow. Obviously I won't run if it still hurts, but last time it felt fine the next day. My left ankle is apparently likes to mess with me. If I can do 5-6 miles tomorrow morning, I'll be happy with that and hopefully I won't slow Alyssa down too much next week for our long trail run.

Does anyone have any experience with that kind of ankle pain? I'm running in fairly new shoes on flat surfaces, but maybe I occasionally bust out a retarded running stride that hurts my ankle? It's not swollen at all and I can bear weight on it without pain. Am I just being a wimp? (Little voice in my head: YES)

  2. Hmm, were you professionally fitted for shoes? Maybe they aren't the right shoes for you.

Faith is so considerate. Bungee woke me up around the same time, but I made her get in bed and go back to sleep. Maybe she wanted to watch too.

  3. No, you are not being a wimp. If you feel pain, you should stop. How new are your shoes? Did you switch brands with these new shoes?

Once, when I switched briefly from Brooks to Mizuno, I got some pain on the inside of my ankle, right where you are pointing to. After awhile it went away but I switched back to my Brooks. I could be from your shoes.

Please quit saying you are old too! It makes me feel reeeaaalllly old :)

  4. I would definitely stop if your ankle hurts. Some pain I think you can push through (the initial muscle burn/tightness, whatever), but I wouldn't screw around with the ankle. Hope it starts to feel better soon!

Thanks for the sweet comment on the blue dress. I love you for that! ;-)

  5. I got new shoes, but the same kind as I had before (but I had ankle pain once with those shoes too). I've run in Asics for a long time, but maybe I need to get fitted again. Perhaps my stride has changed? It's a 2 hour drive to get fitted, but it's probably worth it!

  7. Oh, hun, I'm so sorry! I Hope you'll be able to recover soon and run your 50k next month :-)
    Happy weekend!

  8. You really don't strike me as the wimpy type and I'm sure you know that. My vote would be better safe than sorry and think how mad you'd be if you ended up seriously injured because you tried to push through the pain.

On a happier note, it looks so pretty where you were running!

  9. You did the right thing by stopping. A missed long run (or 2) won't hurt your training overall. If you're worried about the milage and you can do shorter runs maybe you can add those miles into your week. Just a thought... I'm no expert. I am an expert at beating myself up if I miss a planned run though so as far as that goes, you gotta cut yourself some slack! You ran 13.1. this morning! WTG!! :-)

  10. That's so weird, but if it's the same pain as last time, hopefully it will go away just as quickly. I hate stopping runs early and I feel your pain but you were smart to do it. You won't slow me down! If you are driving two hours to get fitted....why don't you just come to Baltimore .... and we can have a date.

  11. That's a solid run! I would love that time for a half marathon distance one day. :) Although I really do hope your ankle feels better. I think you made the smart move.

    Have a great weekend!

  12. Way to be smart and stop running when the pain didn't subside!

I can't wait to hear how your 50Ks go! Maybe I will tackle a few of those next summer!
