The lazy overachiever

I would never describe myself as a running overachiever. I have a healthy fear of overuse injury and generally stick to the training plan without adding on "extra credit" miles. Yesterday was an exception!

It started out with a beautiful run outside. Beautiful? A run outside in August? Yes, by some miracle, it felt like fall outside with a cool breeze! I only sweat half of my usual amount:

Normally, I'm MUCH grosser after 4 miles outside

I had a long gap of baby playtime before I could run again, but eventually she went down for her nap and I could hit the treadmill.  I had a little snack (ok, chips and tootsie rolls) and then hopped on the treadmill. I had the tail end of one episode of Buffy to watch and then the next episode since it was a 2 parter. I got so sucked into it (it was the last episode of season 2 if you must know), that I ran extra. I keep a towel over the distance display because the glow of the screen is distracting from the TV. I have one of those displays that shows your little dot "moving" along the track. So, I figured I was probably going a little extra, but it wouldn't hurt. In retrospect, I could have just stopped running and watched the end while lifting weights, but that didn't occur to me. Plus, it was easier to just keep going (see lazy part of title). I was aiming for 8 miles total and ended up with 9.7. It's ok because my plan called for 7-9 and that's close enough. :)

In my effort to be a less lame mom, I decided to take Faith to the park yesterday afternoon to kill some time give her some outlet for her energy. I went to go put her sandals on and realized they didn't fit at all anymore. Remember these cute little shoes?

Why must they insist on growing?

Her little chubby feet were falling off the back and front of the shoe, so I decided to do shoe shopping yesterday and try for the park today. We found acceptable shoes at Payless (she's in size 6 now). I hope these ones last more than a month.

I think she may have inherited her father's ginormous feet

I tried a few cute pairs of shoes and I realized 2 things:

  1. My legs are looking very muscly.
  2. Holy crap, heels look so silly if you have sock tan.

The shoe shopping trip helped break up the afternoon and we only ended up with a short period of feral baby time. She is obsessed with the dog's bed and the dog's cheap fleece blanket:

Woof

Since the baby wants to act like the dog, the dog has taken over the baby's role and is cuddling with her toys:

We're just friends, it's not what you think

Today is a rest day from running, which is good because I'm running 18 tomorrow and 10 on Sunday. I'm so glad that my 50 mile training plan is familiarizing me with suffering and fatigue, even early in the plan. :)

Do you rock the sock tan?

Where's your favorite place to buy shoes?

  1. So Peanut is a cuddler too. I think Peanut and Pippi would get along well together.

It's my rest day, too! I'm so excited to go home and chillax. Does your 50 miler plan call for any cross-training days? Just curious.

  2. Aw, baby shoes are too freakin' cute! :)

Enjoy your rest day today...and good luck with all the running this weekend!

  3. LOL...no sock tan here, but then again I haven't run outside in forever. :)

And Zappos.com is my favorite for shoes. Can't beat free shipping AND rush delivery! I usually place my order on one day and get my stuff the following. For brick and mortar stores, I like Nordtrom & Dillards. :)

  5. Way to show off your hot calves. I have to say, I'm glad I'm done with this epic 28 miles of running in two days. For this week at least. Of course, with your overachieving, I'm sure you'll hit at least 30. Redheads don't tan, even in the sock area. My favorite place to buy shoes is amazon - for running shoes - are there other kinds?

  6. No sock tan here....I am contantly in flip flops though so I have a major thong tan Haha. I love to get my shoes at Nordstrom Rack because I like to dress like I might have money ;)

  7. Love the role reversal of baby and dog. Bungee has decided that she wants to start sleeping right in between Mike and me. She jams her head under my pillow and snores and kicks mike in the face.

See, now you know why I can run so long on the treadmill. I deprive myself of tv unless I'm running.

  8. I have the worst sock tan ever. Sexy. Heels? I haven't worn a pair in maybe 8 months? I always get PF flare-ups when i do so I save them for special days--which apparently never happen?!

  9. Wow--she's growing so fast! I think your big race is going to go just fine when you run an extra mile + on the treadmill!

  10. No sock tan, but I wear sandals all the time unless I'm running. Which isn't as often as I should be, but whatever...

I love DSW Shoe Warehouse. I had a $75 gift card from Christmas and ended up with a pair of Merrel Sandals, a pair of Born sandals, and a pair of Asics 2160s and I still have $10 left! They really have the most awesome clearance racks!

  11. I have a feeling we would be best friends if we lived closer...I will do things with the kids to keep from being a lazy mom and always only do what my training plan calls for. I can be very lazy about things like housework and other stuff too. Just don't make me run 28 miles in a weekend. ;)

  12. Great extra miles! I usually have the opposite problem "convincing" myself I can finish the allotted number of miles! Yeah me and heels usually don't mix well.

  13. I would never describe myself as a running overachiever --> WHAT?! Ok, ultramarathoner...whatever you say!

My legs repel the sun, so I never have a sock tan or a flip flop tan.

  14. Cracking up picturing a sock tan with heels.

  15. yah I would say ultramarthon is a perfect example of running overachiever :) whatever i am just jealous!!

anyway i buy all my running shoes at a local running store because if you are track club member you get 20% off so its a great deal!

i love kids shoes but my 4 year olds feet barely grow, she has been in an 8 for the past year and counting!! my 17mo is barely a 4 but they do grow much faster!

  16. Are you sure your baby and dog didn't accidentally Freaky Friday? If Faith starts licking her butt then you may need to find a way to reverse them.

I do not rock a sock tan, mostly because I am incapable of tanning below my cleavage. My legs glow in the dark.

  17. Oh I definitely have weird tan lines from running! I wear knee straps and have a lovely line just below my knee. It looks kind of strange when I wear a skirt or shorts.
and side note I am a huge Buffy fan/nerd and own the whole series; I love that show! :)

  18. Surprisingly no sock tan. Which is kind of weird because I do have a killer running shorts tan. My white imaginary running shorts look awful while wearing my bathing suit on the once-in-a-while occasion of going to a friend's pool. I don't even consider the "tan" part of my legs to be very tan.

Love the dog/baby swap. What kind of dog is Peanut? I love her big paws.

  19. oh, and shoes! How could I forget shoes. Running Warehouse is my new favorite for running shoes. I buy dress shoes anywhere from Target to Ann Taylor (on sale). Once I find a style I like I see where I can find it the cheapest - taking free shipping/returns into account and looking to see if I can get cash back or miles for buying through a certain website (Endless.com- amazon-owned but free return shipping and with cash back; piperlime, onlineshoes.com)

  20. I love when runs go long as a result of good tv - you feel accomplished and indulgent at the same time! :)

  21. So Peanut will be using the stroller from now on? That sounds fabulous.

  22. Oh boy, those shoes are like, the size of my thumb! haha! ok, they're not that small but you know...they're cute though!

Your little one is just like my brothers when they were babies...but slept in the hamper together while i slept on the top of my kid table where i ate my dinner. food smashed in my face. yes yes...
