Some days, it just isn't fun

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have about endurance runners is that shorter distances must feel easy. It does seem logical on the surface that if you can run 20 miles and feel good, then 4 miles must be child's play. Running isn't logical, so it doesn't work that way. Just like how running the same route every day can sometimes feel easy and other days really hard, sometimes a 4 mile run is tougher than a 14 mile run.

It was nasty outside yesterday morning, but I still wanted to run outside. I checked the weather and it seemed like the whole day was going to suck weather-wise, so I just got it over with early.

Mommy, you packed my snacks, right?

Don't encase me in plastic, I'll be good I promise!

My BOB has a nice weather shield that lets Faith get air (through vents) and still stay dry. The dog and I were out of luck for staying dry. What I didn't realize when I was inside was how windy it was outside. If you've never pushed a stroller in the wind, just trust me when I say it's hard. (That's what she said)

While Faith stayed dry and cozy and ate Goldfish mixed with Fruit Loops (her new obsession), Peanut and I slogged through the 4 mile route. I kept thinking "Oh man, what if it's like this for the 50 miler? That is going to SUCK". In all of my mental images of the JFK 50, it's always dry, so that was a rough reality check. At least I won't be pushing a stroller or dragging a wet dog?

After we got back, I had a chance to dry off before hitting the treadmill for 3 miles to make it 7 miles for the day. Technically it was a recovery run, but it didn't feel very recovery-y. It's hard to run an easy pace when it's pouring rain and windy, and you just want to get it over with and get back inside.

It rained the rest of the day and Faith enjoyed a chance to bust our her boots:

I bring the fashion to this blog

The boots are actually too small for her and she won't walk in them, but she still will just smack me with them until I put them on her and she just sits and giggles while she looks at her shiny pink boots.

Also, I'm so glad we moved her to a booster seat and retired the high chair. This booster seat is SO much easier to clean up than her high chair. The main drawback is that the booster seat tray is right at Peanut level, so I have to watch to make sure the dog doesn't "help" Faith with her meals.

It's predicted to rain all day again today, so I'll be back outside running in the rain again this morning. Let's hope for no wind!

What do/would you think if you saw someone out running pushing a stroller in the pouring rain? I get some funny looks, so I'm just curious. :)

What's your favorite rainy day activity? If given free rein, I'd go for a nap. Heck, it doesn't even have to be raining for that!

Also, for those who asked, plebe is the name for a first year student at the Naval Academy. In my understanding, they are pretty much everyone's bitch and they get yelled at a lot. Apparently that's supposed to make a better person/officer/whatever, or it's just that the upperclassmen really enjoying a good hazing. :)

  1. It's humid and nasty and gross out this morning. But I hope you have a good run anyway!

  2. Faith's face in the stroller is priceless. She looks so sad. Sounds like a ridiculously rough run. Don't worry about JFK though, by then it will be so cold that any precipitation will be snow. Can't help you on the wind though. It totally messes with my head how running the exact same route can feel so different on different days, or the same pace can feel super easy or be killing you.

  3. I wouldn't judge you for running in the rain with the stroller. Runners do weird stuff.

I want shiny pink rain boots!

I had the same problem visualizing my marathon like my race on Monday and wanting to shoot myself. If it's that bad, I'll probably die at the half-way point. Or just end up walking the whole thing.

  4. if i saw you pushing a stoller in the rain i would think 2 things: (1) she's hardcore and (2) she must hate the treadmill (i can sympathize with that one)!

this rain sucks. the 12 miles of towpath i have to run through on sunday is going to be just lovely.

  5. Like Alyssa said, if it does rain during the JFK, it'll be really, really, really cold rain. Joy!

  6. I love the shiny pink boots! My daughter has pink boots and wears them everywhere! If I saw you running in the rain with a stroller I would think wow she is either really tough or just crazy!

  7. Oh, the rain... I really, really hope it's not this rainy for your 50 miler. Holy crap.

  8. I'm the one pushing the jogger in the rain and I think that I'm crazy at least a 1/4 of the time. My neighbors don't worry about me after all these years. At first they probably worried that I might go postal but after 20 years of it, they know I'm harmless...as long as I run. ;-)

JFK. If it rains. I have to tell you one of my favorite 50ks was in the rain. I didn't put in a stellar time (decent but not awesome) but I LOVED it. I loved the mud, the water, the refeshing air, the smells...it was truly an experience in being a kid again. You know that you CAN go 50 miles. That's mental. If conditions are not ideal simply let go of those crazy "time/pace" worries and embrace just doing it. I'm actually worried I might have snow on mine. Thinking back to the 50k in snow and ice, I'd rather not have to deal with that again but this go round with a 50 miler will probably be simply to complete it regardless of time.

My sons's boots are Buzz Lightyear. I need to find a larger size soon! His poor little toes but he won't stop wearing them.

  9. I would honestly think a woman pushing a stroller in the rain was bad-ass. And maybe a little crazy too!
I ran in the rain yesterday and loved it, because it's novel to me and I never do it!

  10. I would totally think you are absolutely crazy but seriously dedicated!

  11. I can totally sympathize with the short runs feeling harder...I have my own theory on that one.

I was the pregnant woman running in freezing temperatures this winter, so I don't think I have room to judge the woman running with a dog and stroller in the rain - at least Faith was dry!

  12. You know, when I see people running with a baby in the rain I often think "That poor baby!". But really, that's totally unfair. Because the baby is under plastic, so it's no different than running in the sun! I should be thinking "That poor Mommy!".

  13. i saw you pushing a baby stroller & running with a dog, I would think you were a BAD@$$!!! :) You go girl for getting out there!

  14. haha you are brave, i cant push my stroller at all with the girls in (i have an inline phil and ted) either way my arm muscles are obsolete! I think I would be jealous if I saw you doing it, because I would love to do the same thing!!

  15. I loved this post and I wish I had a running stroller but I wasn't a runner when Logan was born. lol How old is Faith?? She is sooo cute!

Also to answer your questions: I LOVE puddle jumping and if it's too gross to go outside....I ALWAYS have bubble baths whenever it rains. I think it's the cold or something. lol

Oh and I would think "HEY look at that mom, running, with a stroller!!! ...and her dog!!! WOW. I wish I was like her" :)

  16. totally agree about the running thing. last week my 20 miler was the best feeling out of all my runs. that was actually a relief after the crappy 5-6 milers i had all week but still!?!

    LOVE nap/movie rainy days!

  17. Rainy day activity: baking, reading, sleeping. yep, best way to make the day go by.

and I might stare at you and thin you're a bit crazy, but then I'll realize how hard core you are. :)

  18. Seriously--one day's cake walk is the next day' torture!

  19. I'm kinda glad to hear that others experience the same as me. I did an easy 12 miles on Saturday, but the 6 I did on Sunday just killed me!!! I dont get it!

  20. Even if it is not nasty out, I find shorter runs to be much harder. I think it has something to do with mentally preparing for longer runs and not thinking too much about the shorter runs.

And if I saw someone pushing a stroller in the pouring rain, I would call myself lazy and put on my running shoes.

  21. Poor Faith looks unhappy in the rain shield! I actually really like running in the rain, but it would probably look strange to see a stroller in the rain. If she's encased in carbonite it really doesn't seem like it should be a big deal.

  22. I can't believe how good she is about being in the stroller.
