I have changed teams

Growing up, I always strongly preferred summer and warm weather to the winter. Once I started running outside year round, I started to shift preferences. Today was the first cool day we've had in weeks and it made me realize that I now strongly prefer cold weather.

The high today was 57 degrees, which was a far cry from the 80 degrees we had just a couple of days ago and since the high tomorrow is back to 75, we don't have the heat on. It was pretty chilly in the house this morning, but the fireplace helped warm things up. Peanut parked herself in front of it and stayed there all morning.

Toasty dog buns

Faith wasn't bothered at all by the chilly air in the house, but I always say that she has Viking blood on both sides so it makes sense that she likes the cold.

Is my Viking blood to blame for my huge hands too?

My 4 mile stroller run outside was one of the best I've had in weeks because it was cooler outside. Apparently I've become like the dog and start acting like I'm running across Death Valley if the temperature nears 70 degrees. That's unfortunate because southern MD isn't known for its cool, dry summers.

It also isn't known for Mommies who make acceptable lunches

Even my treadmill run during nap time was better than usual because it was so cold in the basement. Since Maryland gets so humid in the summer, we have dehumidifers running in the basement and they can make it feel warm down there, so it was a nice change from the last couple of weeks.

I figure that everyone is allowed to complain about one season, as long as they stick with it. Since I refrained from complaining about the cold, that means I have free rein to bitch about the heat. Whenever I read "How to Survive Hot Weather Running" I feel like the underlying message is "You're an idiot for trying to do this". Not that I don't run in the summer, I just recognize that it's an idiotic thing to do.

Since it gets chilly at night with no heat on, I had to bundle Faith up in her fleece pajamas that I almost put away for the season. Thank goodness for laziness.

Ok Daddy, I'm going to run down field and then you throw this to me

Which way are the laces supposed to be when I throw this?

In case you missed it...KITTY CAT FEET

Are you Team Winter or Team Summer?

  1. I wish they made those pajamas in big people sizes.

I think I'm Team Spring/Fall. Can I do that?? But you're reminding me that I signed up for my first marathon at the end of September like an idiot, which probably means my longest runs will be in August, the dead heat of summer. Awesome.

    1. I hope you like getting up early to beat the heat. :)

  2. I am a cold weather runner for sure. I hate the cold, but all my times reflect an actual preference for running/racing at 35-40*.

In all other things, I am a summer lover. I'm considering taking up a different sport for the summer. Maybe swimming? It would be a lot cooler.

    1. Swimming would have to be cooler than summer running!

  3. I'm disappointed in this post. I though "I have switched teams" was about your switch to lesbianism. I'm team winter, but only a really mild GA winter.

    1. I would really like a wife. No one ever makes me lunch.

    2. this gets my vote as well. But only if you included pics and video.

    3. I think a lot of a husband's, like mine, would be surprised to hear that having a wife means you don't have to make your own lunch. If you do make that switch though I call dibs.

    4. You are doing something wrong, Kara. My husband usually makes my lunch and his.

  4. I was having the same thoughts last week when I started a run at 10am and it was already 75. It brought back all the 100 degree days of last summer. Which was all of July and then some.
Although this winter was unusually mild. The winter before we got a foot of snow and ice each week and with not having a treadmill that is problematic. I try to remain neutral.

    1. It's true, it's easy to like winter when it's been as mild as this one!

    2. Yes, I was wondering what "cold" you were referring to that you were so strong for not complaining about.

  5. Team Winter, absolutely. So why do I keep signing up for fall marathons?!

    1. Spring marathons are far superior! :)

  6. This Florida girl is all about the summer!!!

Also, if Peanut has the kind of gas my dogs have, having her derrière facing the fire might potentially be dangerous.

    1. Peanut saves her farting for when she has her butt facing me on the couch. :)

  7. I am team summer. Always have been. Will never change. The heat does bug me........sometimes......but I love the bright sun that summer brings. Although this has been an amazing winter. We're lucky!

  8. Team heat.

However, I did like the fact that running in the winter I sweat less and was able to re-use the same running clothes for more than one workout.

    1. I have never had a workout where I didn't sweat through everything I was wearing, no matter the temp. I'm special. :)

  9. Summer all the way. Summer here gets HOT, 30-40 celsius (like over 100 your temp) and I LOVE it humid hot sweaty, running in a sauna love love love love it, I pack my camel bak and run (of course I max out at 21K which is nothing compared to what you do).

The alternative, -20 degrees, no thanks.

  10. I was so proud of us when I heard that they canceled the Annapolis track meet the night it hit triple digits -- and we had ours that night. Can't you just hardly wait for them?? Oh, and there are still spots available for Endless Summer, I believe.

    1. I know you're mad the Endless Summer run won't happen in July like last year and require hourly weighing. :)

  11. I was actually surprised to hear that there is such a thing as a dehumidifier. Around my neck of the woods we have humidifiers in our rooms. I think crazy heat + crazy humidity = miserable running (and possibly crying).

    1. I can't imagine trying to make it MORE humid than it already is around here. :)

  12. I'll probably still complain about the heat, but I'm more team summer than winter. It's more about daylight for me though, just not a fan of the dark and cold.

    1. If I had to fit my running around a work schedule, I would probably prefer the longer summer daylight hours too!

  13. Didn't miss the kitty cat feet :) too cute. Does she slip if she's running around in pj pants though? Peanut always falls down if she's just in socks or pj's.

  14. Team summer, all the way, all my life. Obviously as a teacher that's the only option. I love reading outside by the pool, I love sunshine, I hate winter so much I moved 400 miles from home to avoid it. Running in the heat sucks but not as much as trying to get yourself outside at 5am when it's pitch black and the temperature is in the single digits. If you run at like 5am this summer you'll be fine. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd prefer to live in winter weather, but run in summer weather. That way I can complain about both. win win

  16. My husband didn't believe me about humid it gets in Maryland in the summer...he didn't think it could worse than Texas...until we visited my brother in Baltimore the first time during the summer - now he's a believer :)

I prefer cold weather running to warm weather running any day!

  17. Team summer!!!! I love long runs in the heat...wearing just a tank and shorts!!!!

  18. I'm team winter...BUT not team frigid winter. I like to have my cake and eat it too, what can I say.

  19. OMG, love the shoes! I'm team summer, but in the pacific northwest, our summer is a lot like your fall or spring, it sounds like. Highs are typically in the 70s, with a few 80 degree days sprinkled in.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm definitely team winter! I can complain about heat while running like no one else. Why am I planning a fall marathon then? No freaking clue.

Last time I trained in the summer - I got up before the sun to attempt to beat the heat. Last summer? I used pregnancy to avoid the heat. HA!

  21. I definitely am team winter. I tried to run in the blistering heat today and it did not work out.

  22. I HATE summer, hate it!! My first 10k was on the 4th of July and when it was over 80 degrees just after 8 when I finished I realized that running it the heat is killer!! It gets so hot here and it lasts so long that I want to just melt on the floor. Winter here is nothing! I love it, 40's and 50's are the norm, lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I definitely prefer cold weather running to hot weather running! The heat just drains so much energy from me. Being able to run in the winter weather here has been fun! I'll still run in the heat, but they are definitely harder runs

and I love the kitty-cat feet on Faith's pjs- too cute! :)
