Make my life decisions for me

I have a confession: I am a haircut procrastinator. I know I should at least get it trimmed 2 or 3 times a year, but since Faith was born it just hasn't happened. It's not my husband's fault because he's willing to watch the kid so I can go, but I always use his free time for my running instead. It just seems like a better use of my time than trying to have forced small talk over the white noise of a hair dryer.

So, it's been a little over a year since I had a hair cut. My hair is looking pretty rough and it finally forced me to make a hair appointment for tomorrow afternoon. Even my split ends have split ends! I guess I can't be upset, this hair has seen a lot of miles and sweat.

No make up? Man, I'm so brave.

It air dries so beautifully

Since I can't decide, I'm open to suggestions about what to do with it: just a trim or cut it all off? I could also be talked into bangs, I've had those before and thought they were ok (but a pain to trim). You'll get bonus blog friend points if you actually suggest a specific hair style or link to a picture that I can print out and take with me. I'm not lazy, I just like giving voice to other opinions...yeah.

Other than the arduous task of making a haircut appointment, I ran a little over 8 miles today and read about 89 books to Faith. I've been cutting her TV time since she's not sick anymore and as a result, she is a very demanding book worm.

Why are you just sitting there?

Read me this book NOW!

No Mommy, you're not doing it right. Let me hold it.

It's amazing how annoying Dr. Seuss can become after just 2 readings. So many make up words, so much annoyance. What is a "Zizzer zazzer zuzz" anyway?

Faith is feeling almost 100% better today and isn't even whining and crying all day like she was for the last few days. Having her back to her normal (quieter) self today was wonderful.

I'm just saving it up for the weekend

So what's your verdict on the hair?

Do you ever go nuts with your hair or do you normally just get the same cut over and over again?

Edited to add pictures of my new hair!

I got bangs out of spite for everyone who told me not to get them

It doesn't resemble a rat's nest anymore!

  1. Ha, my sole New Year's resolution was actually to get a cut every six weeks. The past 10 years I went maybe once each year. Frequent cuts seem like such a waste of time and money, but I have to admit it does feel good to be keeping up with some sort of beauty routine. A haircut every six weeks counts as a beauty routine, right?

Have you thought about donating your hair to Locks of Love? I did that about a year ago, and it was pretty neat.

  2. Chop it! 1. that is a fucked up URL, but I can support that length hair.

    2. I was going to suggest a style like this one! I've decided to chop all my hair off too and this is close to the style that I used to have that I really liked so I'm going back!

In your case though, make sure you can still pull it back for runs!

  3. I vote to chop it up to your shoulders. Any shorter than that and you won't be able to do a ponytail and you might not like that for running.

  4. If I didn't taper...I am not sure if I would ever get my hair cut. It's looking pretty ratty now. Good thing my training will be ramping down. I say, keep it long with some layers. No bangs unless they are long like this:

    This is cute too:

You still want to be able to put it in a pony tail, right? You would look cute in just about any cut though. Have fun and try to relax and enjoy the pampering.

    1. I like that Reese one a lot!

    2. I kind of have the Reese one in this slide now, but I'm needing to get rid of the length. I really like the Kristen Bell one (#37) - you'd still be able to pull it back & gave some bangage!

  5. I just told my SIL today that if I don't get a cut soon people will start to think I live on the streets.

I chopped mine all off a year and a half ago and it was great until it came to work out. I probably won't be going that short again for a while. I say cut like five inches with a little layering at the bottom. A little longer than shoulder length so you can still put it up and the layers will make it look like you gave it some effort :)

  6. I say chop it! I'm all about drastic hair cuts because, let's face it: it will grow back! If you're not averse to bangs, maybe try some side ones? That way, you can still pin them back, etc. when you're running and stuff. Oh, and some layers around your face would be cute, too :)

  7. I say this honestly, and not to troll (this time):
cut off as much as you can while still keeping it long enough to tie back.

I love short hair on women. I think it's awesome.

And maybe you can save some of it for a wig for Faith. It's not like she's growing any of her own.

Also, I wish you'd read me books all day.

  9. I say go big and dramatic! It's only hair and it grows back. But keep it long enough that you can pull it back into a pony tail and/or clip the bangs back. That is always my one request when I go dramatic with a new cut. It drives me nuts if I can't have my hair off my face when I workout!

    1. I had bangs for over a year so I have a huge collection of hair clips!

  10. I get the same hair cut over and over until i go nuts and cut it all off, then I hate myself and grow it out again. I am currently in the growing it out phase, so I say just wack off a couple inches and get some bangs to be dramatic, I have a love hate with my bangs too.

Glad the little one is feeling better!

  11. I'm guilty of not getting my hair cut in the last year either! Short hair on me drives me crazy but if you think you can handle it then go for it!

  12. Sorry, no help from me on the hair cutting front. I normally just get my chopped off every 1.5 yrs for locks of love and never get it trimmed in between. :|

Glad to hear Faith is feeling better though!

  13. you're lucky you don't have curly hair. i have to get it cut so often since it's so dry.

i'd go with whatever is easier. i just got my hair cut shorter and, from a running perspective, it's great! i heard bangs are a pain in the ass though. i wouldn't know but that's what i heard ;)

  14. I'm very bad about getting my hair cut, so I generally cut it shorter, let it grow until it's long enough to annoy me, and cut off several inches again....and again....

I vote no bangs - because if you're bad at getting your hair trimmed (like me) bangs would be even harder.

    1. If I get bangs, I'll never get them trimmed. It's my thing. :)

      Delete
    2. Bangs always seem like such a good idea, but then they are so annoying. I think you should just shave it all off.

  15. I'm bad about getting mine cut on a regular basis and never do anything different. I go in say cut to the shortest possible with long layers where I can still get it all back in a ponytail. Then, I just let it grow until it annoys me too much and get it chopped again. So, I have no good suggestions!

  16. I haven't had my hair cut/trimmed since I donated it last time. It is in terrible condition! But I just don't think getting my hair cut is a valuable use of my time. I wish they would come do it while I slept. I will probably just wait until its long enough to donate again and get it chopped. I might have the bangs cut back in this time so I say chop it and go for bangs. (just shoulder length so you can still do a pony tail. Or wear pig tails like I do when I get mine cut!)

  17. If you cut in bangs, you can just get more of Emily's headbands. A sales strategy for her. I think cut it just to the collar - should be long enough to tie back while running and I always think that length makes people look younger. Not that I have hair to speak of. I always get the same style b/c I can't be bothered.

There must be after pictures in our future.

  18. I haven't cut my hair in almost a year either. Sometimes I just end up doing it myself and that does NOT work out. I'm so proud of you for going makeup free. So brave. Have you considered a book - OMG such an inspiration to me!!!

  19. Just say no to bangs. They always seem like a good idea but they are not. Way too much work. I cut mine and they were ok for about a month....I have been pinning them back ever since...

  20. the angle of that first photo makes your forehead look HUGE. It scared the baby.

  21. I just went 6 months without a trim...I'm growing it out to donate to Locks of Love again but I have massive amount of thick hair and with summer coming, it's getting pretty old to have to get creative when trying to keep my hair under control during triathlon training. Just say no to bangs! They are a b- to grow out! :)

  22. You have 29 comments so I'll assume they all are more stylish/know more than me, so I'll just say I think you'd look really cute with bangs but they might drive you insane while running. Also, if that's how your hair looks without doing anything, you are super lucky. You should see what happens to mine if I air dry with no product.

Let me know if you get that no-makeup medal. I haven't received mine yet and I even go to WORK like that.

  23. I bet you'd look good with a bowl cut.

  24. The more I learn about you, the more I like you! Since having kids, my hair has been low on the totem pole of priorities. I would much rather run in my free time than spend money on a haircut. So, once my hair was long enough for a ponytail, that's where it has been for the last 2 years. My haircuts usually occur biannually and lately coincide with races. It's kind of a newish tradition, to get my hair cut before a race. But only enough to get rid of the jagged dead ends. As long as I am a runner, the ponytail is a must! And a hair dryer, pfft!

  25. oh goodness, haircuts are so fun and stressful and I am going to be an awful friend and give no advice because the one thing I stink at is, hair! I wish I knew it but I agree dont go to short, a ponytail is very important when you run a lot, well unless its really short than no need! I dream of doing a pixie cut someday but doubt I would ever do it but I adore women who do!

  26. 2-3 inch trim with some long layers. Your hair is looks nice long. And that is an easy style and grows out well and doesn't require lots of maintenance.

  27. I'm a hair dresser slacker too (would rather run/sleep/read/go to dentist). In December, after months and months I got my husband to cut my hair! He did an okay job, but not great.
It's just hair, cut it all into a bob (I recently did it again and I love having short hair! So much more convenient). But I like zero work for hair.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe add in some layers? When I cut mine really short about every 2 years to donate I notice that it is actually harder for working out because I have to put a lot of clips in to keep it out of my face!

  29. Crap. I totally realized that 1) I'm late to the party 2) I haven't cut my hair in over a year. Classy.

I got nothin' for ya. Growing up with 3 brothers, all I do is go online for ideas and look at cute cuts I like, 99% of which I can't do thanks to my uber curly mane.

  30. I want Halle Barry hair but I don't look fabulous like her and therefore would be looking like Ellen instead. For you, I say cut off a couple inches, no bangs. Bangs only fly in your face and itch your forehead when running.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love the length of your hair, and think the length is probably good for pony tails/running. I would suggest trimming 2-3 inches & just an overall clean up of the ends. I would not do bangs - they would drive me bananas while running.

  32. So are you and Faith twins now or what?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm gonna stalk your comments... I've been thinking the same thing lately, and have similar hair length/style. Can't decide if I should just trim it, or chop it and add bangs and a change of pace. Curious to see what you decide!

  34. Hot! Those weren't the type of bangs I was expecting. Looks great!

  35. It looks great! I like the bangs. I always have a hard time deciding what to do with my hair. Maybe one day I need to do a post like this to get some inspiration :).

  36. Looking good! I usually get the same haircut every 2 years or so. My hair is almost always in a pony tail anyway.

  37. I love your new hair. Since I had children, I get mine cut and colored 3x per year max. I have to look like Tom Petty before I go in.

I also just read your previous post. I'm glad Faith is better and sorry about all the dog vomit and the cookies being wrecked for you forever. But the captions on the dog pictures cracked me up. And I too am a huge wimp about the heat. Our house has no AC. Last summer it was like an oven. The only thing that made it bearable to me was at least Colorado is dry, so it cools down a bit at night. But the days were awful. Can't wait until we get out of this rental....

  38. I can't tell the difference.

  39. New haircut looks good! Luckily since you were so brave to not wear makeup in that first picture, I could see your inner beauty. My hair requirements are: 1. don't layer my curly hair in a way that gives me a mullet. 2. Keep it long enough for a pony tail. Because only real hair places, not supercuts, knows how NOT to give me a curly mullet, I have been shelling out way too much for a hair cut. Also, it was in Princeton, so lots of things were overpriced. But if I only get it cut 3x a year, that's ok, right? Now I need to find a new place in CA.
