Gold Star Needed

I always joke to my husband that the key to martial happiness is low expectations. This way if he comes home and the dishes aren't piled in the sink, he's impressed with my industrious mood. Also if I cook dinner two nights in a row, he thinks I've turned into Martha fucking Stewart.

There was no "Cooking and Cleaning" section of the vows, right?

I've decided to apply the low expectations rule to my workouts now that I'm gestating a tiny person in hopes that I can be less cranky about the days when it doesn't go well. It hasn't really worked so far. I'm not really good at telling myself that I'm a superstar for just trying. I'm much better at mentally yelling at myself to suck it up and run. I did have one decent run this weekend and one crappy one, but at least I ran twice? There, that's the ticket.

I had a failed run day on Friday (allergies and morning sickness combined to kick my butt), so I had fresh legs for a group run early Saturday morning. Six women (plus my crazy dog) were in the group and we kept a nice conversational pace and did a little over 9 miles. It's nice to run with other people who are pro-walk breaks! It was warm for the run, even though we went really early, so I appreciated the walk breaks so I could cool down a bit. I think it might be getting close to the time of year when I need to leave the dog at home (she has a thick black fur coat), but hopefully we can get another month in before that!

Can't I just leave my coat at home??

I felt pretty good for the whole run and got home in time to grab breakfast and then take Faith to her swim lessons. It's fascinating to me how much she has advanced in just a few classes. She went from clinging to me for dear life to willingly dunking her head under water and blowing bubbles on command. By the time I got the kid back home (I swear dealing with a toddler in a locker room should be considered an athletic event), I was more than ready to eat and then shower...and then nap. I had been up with Faith at 3:50am and then after I calmed her down, she had a party in her crib with bouncing and giggling until 5am, so I was pretty tired in addition to my normal level of fatigue.

That afternoon I drove all the way to McDonald's to get a vanilla milkshake and their machine was broken. I swear I earned a pregnancy gold star for not crying and just getting a McFlurry instead (it wasn't the same AT ALL). It's almost as bad as last week when I got a vanilla milkshake at Chick-Fil-a (who wants to guess my latest craving?) and they didn't put the cherry on top! I seriously almost backed up to the drive-through window to get my freaking cherry. I had to buy myself a whole jar of cherries at Target today just to right that wrong.

This has been your weekly installment of "First World Pregnancy Problems"

Today has been pouring rain all day which never seems to light a fire under me to do anything other than lounge. Since my short dictatorial friend doesn't like to let me lounge, we went to Target instead to get groceries and more giant size onesies since someone keeps taking off her diaper during the night if she's not wearing a garment that prohibits her access. Finding 2T size onesies is not an easy task! We had to settle for 24 month size, but it seems roomy enough (even though other 24 month size stuff doesn't fit? I guess I just won't over-think baby vanity sizing)

Have you considered that my butt NEEDS TO BREATHE?

My  husband is doing grad school work all day today, so I ran during nap time. I thought that I had more time before this started, but my hips are already starting to hurt. It's hard to describe it (unless you've been pregnant) but your hips just get this deep ache and impact doesn't feel good. I ended up walking a fair bit, but I did cover 4 miles (another gold star for me, right?). The hip pain is the kind of thing that you have no matter what you do (it's the worst at night when you're trying to get comfortable for sleeping), but if running starts making it worse, that's a good indication for me to start seriously cutting back. I need my hips to be in good working order because if you haven't noticed, my first kid had a huge head (97% percentile!) and that shit doesn't just slide out.

If that paragraph just scared you away from wanting to have kids, here's an adorable video of Faith feeding her stuffed lion macaroni and cheese (don't worry, it's organic...phew) that should make it all better.

In your opinion, which fast food place has the best milkshake? I like Chick-fil-a's for the whipped cream and cherry, but McDonald's has the superior shake in my opinion.

  1. You get a gold star for not killing that person who didn't give you the cherry. I might have cut a bitch. Also, that video was adorable, but I'm not sure it fully mitigates my fear of someday birthing giant-headed babies.

    1. Don't worry, that's why they have wonderful drugs.

    2. I'm with Emily. Faith is adorable, but I'm still not ok with doing that. My husband was 11lbs 9oz. Terrifying, right? I keep telling him he needs to find a nice woman to carry a baby of that size, because I won't do it! ;)

Shakes? In n Out Neapolitan shake. Ooooh so delicious!

  2. I'm going to pass over the whole childbirth section and focus in on something I'm an expert in...frozen desserts.
    1) The McFlurry is a wonderful choice.
    2) A Frosty from Wendy's is also better than a milkshake.

    You're welcome.

  3. My version of this has no video. I feel robbed. I haven't had a fast food milkshake in forever but there's a local joint here called Graffiti Burger that has a rocking one. Man, now I need to have one.

  5. McDonald's has the BEST milkshake, hands down!!!!

hip pain, nausea, large heads...pregnancy sounds real sweet.

  6. When I opened this post, and saw your giant husband's picture, I was thinking that this was some sort of anniversary post. But then I thought, "that can't be right, her wedding was 105 degrees in the shade, and today it's not even 50!"

At least you're not throwing up in your mouth every time you sleep. That's a plus, right?

  7. My order for creamy, icy drinks is as follows: Wendy's Chocolate Frosty, McDonald's Reeses PB flurry, then McD's Vanilla Shake.

For a while McD's had a rolo flurry with hot caramel mixed it. It was sooo good, but you had to eat it right away so it didn't melt.

What brand onesies did you get? Logan is in Carter's 24 month, but I'm not sure they will fit through the entire summer.

Are toddler giggles not the best thing ever?

    1. I got Carter's because it's the only brand other than Gerber that Target carries. I don't know how long they will last until she grows out of them, but I'm really hoping that she grows out of her diaper freedom wishes first!

    2. Rolo McFlurries were worth killing a man for and now my stupid McDonalds doesn't have that or even Reese's.

    3. Cameron stuck his hand down the back of his diaper and pulled out a nice surprise for husband while I was out yesterday - first time he's ever done that and I'm happy it was for the husband :-) I was all about the diaper shirt/onesies from Carters but he's outgrown them - they seem to have the longest torso which helps a bit to accommodate the wash shrinkage.

The last time I had a milkshake was when I was pregnant! It was the awesome old fashioned kind (made from real ice cream and milk in a blender) at a place called "The Chicken Burger" which is an old school drive up/drive in style place unique to our area and has been around for decades. Best real tasting burgers and chicken burgers everrrr.

  8. I'm applying the low expectations to my workouts these days as well - though, you have a better excuse to do so than I. And, doing the same in a marriage is the way to go :)

  9. Anything cookies and cream is far superior to anything vanilla so this whole post makes no sense to me, although I do agree the cherry is important. I like how you worded it to seem like you are the sole person in the world who loses all motivation to do anything when it rains, we all just want to curl up with a good book. You can talk about your hips all you want but you aren't fooling anyone, this post brought vag-jay-jay images to mind.

  10. I go for the Wendy's Frosty, particularly post run for some reason. On Saturday I ran a dog in the morning and by the time I got home to run with my own, it was too hot. Time for me to shift to complaining about the heat.

  11. My favorite would be Steak N' Shake chocolate shake. If that counts as a fast food place. Also love a Wendy's Frosty.

  12. I have been craving milkshakes for a while but those fakey ones give me indigestion so I need to go to steak-n-shake for the real deal. Do you have steak-n-shakes by you? They're the bomb. Also, I cried over a burnt english muffin about two weeks ago. The only person I could be mad at clearly was the toaster, and after that, my mother in law.

  13. I ate McDonald's shakes all the time when I was pregnant, but also many other forms of ice cream (didn't have access to Chik-Fil-A, alas, though I do now).

Seeing my niece last weekend almost made me want to have another baby. But I've since re-revised that opinion. If I do decide I want another baby, I can adopt.

  14. I laughed so hard at this. Taking two kids to swimming lessons & wrestling them in & out of wet trunks & into pajamas & showering & drying, & chasing. . . it gives me the chills just thinking about it. Sam is now old enough to manage the locker room himself, & I can generally bribe Nick to stay still.

I feel you on the hip pain. Take it easy, because once it starts, you DO NOT want to aggravate it during the rest of the pregnancy. . . maybe try icing them? Not sure if you can easily ice your hips. ..

And, I get down with a Frosty from Wendy's, myself. Today I tried to tell myself that a vanilla protein shake (with a banana) was like a banana milkshake. . . Yeah, not so much. :-)

  15. I took old footy jammies my girls had outgrown by height, cut the feet off and put them on backwards to keep the night time strip shows at bay.

I like blizzards from DQ myself. Just recently tried the chocolate lovers, it was good!

  16. What did Peanut ever do to you, that you're going to torture her by refusing to let her run??

At least let her get pregnant, so she can complain about her hips, and throw up even more often. Like someone else.

  17. I want to read more textfromdog. Tell that guy to write them more often. Or write them for him. Do something.

PS: How come you never run in that pretty white dress?

  18. I swear to God that the McDonalds shake machines are down more times during a pregnancy than normal. So incredibly UNFAIR.

Hope the hip pain goes away. I found that after a few days my body would adjust to the kiddo's growth spurt; which apparently affected my hips.

I'm pretty sure I could overdose on Chick-Fil-A's peach shake.

    1. The girl at McDonald's didn't even seem sad that the shake machine was broken. She obviously had no idea. :)

  19. Wendy's used to have something called a "coffee toffee twisted frosty" complete with whipped cream and cherry. It was pretty awesome. Today I had an In-N-Out Burger Neapolitan shake (that's right: choc, vanilla, and strawberry).

  23. That video is AWESOME. 2 follow up questions: is your kid eating off the floor and is she just eating standing up? I would like to know because this often happens at my house as well. LOL

    LOVE her adorable baby laugh.

  24. Chik fil-A was my milkshake of choice during pregnancy. But, a local place walking distance from my house had an even better shake. I had to stop going there though, because the guy kept giving me a hard time about ONLY getting a shake. Idiot.

  25. I don't think you have them, but I believe that In N' Out have the best milkshakes. I mean, you can get a neapolitan one; vanilla, strawberry AND chocolate in a milkshake!? It's awesome, especially with french fries.

    Now I want one.

  28. I'm playing catch up and was just skimming, but what an important question. I think I have to do some more field research. Do you have a Steak and Shake, they deserve an honorable mention
