Deep thoughts

I was having deep thoughts about shoes today, probably due to either hormones or my need for more sleep. Most of the time my shoes don't inspire me, but Faith has more fun with her shoes.

Faith likes to wear sparkle shoes when I push her in the jogger

I either wear running shoes or flip flops and recently Faith decided to be cool like me:

Toddler feet in flip flops = cutest thing ever

But the reason I was thinking about shoes today was that my running shoes were worn out and I pulled out a new pair this morning. I stockpile my Brooks when they are on sale, so I already had a new pair in the closet. Normally when I put on a shiny white pair of running shoes it's a happy day, but today I felt somewhat mixed about it.

Are you tired of looking at my kitchen floor yet?

Most the time my retired pairs of shoes have a fun resume of races completed and miles run, but this time I'm not sure this pair of shoes will get to do epic shit. Unless you think not being able to see your feet for much longer is really epic.

At least I can still see if they are tied.

Pregnant running is a mental challenge more than anything and I had to shake the feeling that I was "wasting" a new pair of shoes by wearing them now. Considering how hard pregnancy can be on your joints, I probably need more cushion now than ever so trying to run in old shoes would be a horrible choice. Maybe I need to take my own advice:

I want to frame this

While we're on the topic of running related deep thoughts, I have to talk about Nuun. In case you're not familiar, Nuun is a water enhancement that comes in a tablet form and it creates an electrolyte sports drink. Nuun sponsors runners in the Hood to Coast relay so you'll hear lots of bloggers wax on and on about the wonders of Nuun.

I bet Jesus would have turned water into Nuun if he had known it was so popular

Here's something I've realized with experience: Nuun can give some people the shits. Why? Because of this:

Other Ingredients: citric acid, sorbitol, sodium carbonate, natural colors flavors, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, polyethylene glycol, magnesium sulfate, sodium benzoate, calcium carbonate, acesulfame potassium, riboflavin-5-phosphate.

Nunn uses a fake sugar called sorbitol to give their drink sweetness without calories. That's super special for the people who care about having an extra 20 calories in their day, but for people who want to run for hours in the woods, it is just a recipe of lots of tree stops. Yeah, lots of people can drink it and be fine, but I'm not one of them. It took me a while to realize the correlation between drinking Nuun and GI upset, but once I figured it out and stopped using it, I don't have such a recurring issue. I'm not the only person I know who has that issue with Nuun, but it's still the most widely sold electrolyte drink tablet.

This is why I now stick with Nathan Catalyst which uses fructose as a sweetener instead. Plus it dissolves much better than Nuun and they don't even annoy me with getting bloggers to constantly kiss their ass.

Harder to find, but worth the effort

Other than having deep thoughts about shoes and getting the shits from a sports drink, I also picked up the dog from her "pet paradise" this morning. She actually smelled good for once since she got a bath yesterday, so she'll probably be clean for a whole day or two. She apparently missed the couch more than anything.

We're going to need a wider couch
We were only able to run 2.2 miles outside because it was so hot and humid (almost 80 degrees at 10am?) and even when I ran on the treadmill later I was so freaking hot. I need to rig up some kind of fan filled with ice that blows an arctic wind on me as I run on the treadmill. I bet that would be a top seller on Amazon!

Faith was Cranky McFussypants today, but I expected that after her action packed weekend. I mean, who wouldn't be fussy if they realized they were stuck with JUST me all day after a weekend full of doing fun stuff like this whenever they wanted?

Now dance Daddy, DANCE!

Tomorrow is predicted to be another hot, humid day so I'll make sure to get outside early so maybe you won't hear so much whining about the heat tomorrow. I doubt it though.

What do you like to drink when you workout? I prefer lemon lime Gatorade above all things, but I use Nathan Catalyst for my hydration vest pack because it's easier to clean out than Gatorade.

  1. This post cracked me up Kara! I prefer to stick to my blue gatorade. I had Nuun once and it was not for me!

  2. I didn't like Nuun either. I don't like that 'dissolved tablet' flavor. gag. I felt like the black sheep of the running/blogging world. What? You don't like Nuun?? WTF is wrong with you? Are you a Nazi? Glad I'm not the only one.

I like the Propel Zero grape in the powder packet. That's it. Nothing else.

I'm so jealous of your hot and humid 80 deg. We had cold and rainy 45 deg today. :(

  3. My sensitive pregnancy palate can only handle Powerade Zero in purple (don't ask me what the flavor actually is...my tongue just knows colors. Perverse joke at will). It congeals in my mouth though and makes me spit like a trucker and I find that unappealing. As to your shoe dilemma, I think you're embarking on a new, albeit less intense, journey. Didn't you say you didn't really start running hardcore until after Faith was born? Those can be your special preggo shoes. I find that you maintain your running while knocked up to be quite impressive. It's so easy to be lazy. I am.

    1. I like the idea of calling them my special pregnant shoes. :)

  4. I've never had Nuun but I'm really glad for this information, as my GI tract and I have a very delicately balanced relationship. If I'm drinking an electrolyte supplement I'm not worrying about the calories in it because I'm most likely burning them faster than consuming them anyway. I'm with you. Gatorade is my go-to. I've never tried the tablets.

Peanut, as always, makes me laugh. Thank you for including all family members in this post.

  5. I think I'm the only person on the planet that has never tried Nuun! I'm willing to try it but luckily, my stomach handles most things. These days I'm drinking Cytomax because it was super cheap in bulk on Amazon :) Winning.

    1. I've only ever had Cytomax once before at a race! I never see it for sale anywhere.

    2. I like the tropical fruit flavor of cytomax, I got it at one of my races, but I don't know where to buy it either.

  6. You know I'm with you on Nuun. Nathan Catalyst! I'm trying it!

I was like that about my running shoes when I was pregnant (though I didn't run much)--I didn't want to "waste" them. I put them on two months after the babies were born and they were like new.

  7. The one and only time I tried Nuun I ended up barfing over the side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Most scenic pukefest ever.I'm just glad it came out of that end, not the other. So I'm not planning on kissing their ass unless they want to clean mine.

I'm 100% on the lemon lime gatorade train. And the sparkly shoes train. Speaking of shoes, I need to find new shoes, since my last pair were probably a good contributor to my current "stress fracture" or whatever it is.

  8. My stomach seems to handle the Nuun and I actually like it (even though I have no desire to be on one of their teams) but I've heard of the issue with the sorbitol before. Regular lemon lime gatorade seems to be too much for me (I'm thinking this may have been part of my issue with the marathon this weekend) but used to drink the G2 stuff before Nuun without issues. It's like a never ending science project to figure out the right balance of all this crap!

    1. G2 and I don't get along either, mostly because it tastes so awful. I accidentally bought some once (the stupid labels look too much alike) and I had to throw it out. Real Gatorade for life! :)

  9. Nuun doesn't bother me, but any other gatorade/powerade "zero calorie" drinks are terrible on my stomach. Oh, and Heed. Around here they serve that at all the races and it makes me want to gag just tasting it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thank you for that information on Nuun!

I actually prefer water, but for longer runs I go for power aide. I may have to try Nathan's now though.

Maybe your new shoes just need a little glitter...it works for Faith.

  11. You might not "waste" your shoes. Your shoe size might change this time around. I went up 1/2 size with pregnancy.

I do like Nuun, but I don't like fooling with it during ultras. I tend to carry only water and drink anything from an aid station except for Heed *shudders*. I like either G2 or Real PowerAde after a run. I can't stand PowerAde Zero and regular Gatorade tastes too salty to me.

  12. Ah sorbitol, my mortal enemy, makes me horribly sick too, thanks for the info, I haven't had Nunn and now I won't be drinking it, that would be a disaster. Ihad zipfizz today for the first time, it was yummy but will have to go read the ingredients.

Really, I just drink water, I'm no real serious runner.

I just love those sparkle shoes.

  13. I drink Gatorade's Mixed Berry. I also like the light purple and blue. I like the mixed berry because it has no color to it so I can drink it with my clear retainers in.

It was 80 here as well today. It sucked hairy balls. I couldn't imagine running with a stroller and being prego. I also broke a sweat in the house doing yoga. It may be time to turn on the air.

  15. Screw sports drinks, salt pills and water do me just fine. I actually do like Nuun once in a while, but not enough to pimp it for a free tube or something.

Faith was obviously trying to protect us from seeing ginger hair.

  16. I think retiring those shoes after pregnant running is a pretty epic "event" to remember :-)

"I need to rig up some kind of fan filled with ice that blows an arctic wind on me as I run on the treadmill" - don't they call those air conditioners? :-D

  17. I like red and blue Gatorade post long runs, and drink Nuun during runs. I tried the Camelback tablets and those things gave me horrible stomach cramps. Not sure why, but now I avoid them. Sorry Camelback...great hydration system, but poor drink.

Also it's currently 64* with 94% humidity. UGH. I need to run NOW before it's get to like 85*.

  18. I've used the GU tablets too and they aren't awful. In case you're wondering.

You actually remember when you switch out your shoes what races you've done in them? The only way I can tell is if the shoes are different colors and i remember the pictures. I've just been buying the blue ones now, though.

  19. What I'm getting out of this blog post is that Nuun = 20 more calories of ice cream, Nathan = fatty. Which one did you drink at Rosaryville? I got those same boring blue Brooks when they were on sale on amazon.

When i saw the first picture, I was hoping it was a giveaway.

  21. Dude you are DEEP. I think you're totally right and need to believe it - it's totally way more important that your shoes are new, shiny and cushiony when you're pregnant. Another positive side effect - they will make you want to run more/better/faster/(bigger, stronger, YE..sorry lyrics took over) because you're going to make sure you don't "waste" them.

  22. Agreed about little babers feet in flip flops ~ adorable :)

  23. I said this on another blog, but I don't like Nuun either. I thought I was the only one with all the raves I've read about it.

Oh, and I am impressed with how clean your kitchen floor is, especially with a toddler and a hound dog!

  24. Ugh - gatorade and I do not get along at all, especially the lemon lime. Nuun and I get along just fine (even before all the blogger love fest - yeah, that's right, I'm so hipster...I liked nuun BEFORE it was cool), though I'd be interested in the Nathan Catalyst just to see what it is like. I've tried the Gu tablets and maybe I just need to try another flavour but I didn't like the aftertaste...

Both toddler feet shots are adorable.

  25. I can tell I'm going to learn a lot from you in reading pregnancy related blogs :-) Oh and yes soooo true about the kissing ass... I actually just got a bottle of the other brand to try so I'll see how it goes!

  27. So I hadn't tried Nuun until Monday. Someone I volunteered with at the race gave me a container of Nuun tabs to try. The taste was ok (mixed berry) and I didn't poop myself, so that's good. I was comparing them to my Gu Brew tablets that look the same. Gu Brew also has sorbitol (and stevia leaf extract- which I tend to avoid on principle, along with all other non-sugar sweeteners, because I don't get why we need to avoid real sugar). I have a big tub of powdered lemon-lime Gatorade that I like. I don't care about the number of calories in my sports drink on long runs either, I just don't want to die.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi, toddler feet in flip flops are so ridiculously cute! Love it. And, that's quite a bump you are sporting. Your graphic on "man up" is a classic. I'm going to have to use that. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Love those little feet sticking out! Thanks for sharing the Nathan catalyst option, I've never had theirs, but was also not a fan of some of the ingredients in Nuun.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The pictures of your and Faith's feet are too cute. I love her little shoes! I do love Nuun, but it's never given me any stomach issues thankfully. I just can't do Gatorade. It's too sweet to me which is probably why I like Nuun since it's a lighter taste. I don't care about the low calorie thing because I usually just drink it during long runs so I wouldn't mind consuming some extra cals. I'll have to try the Nathan Catalyst though to see if I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I totally want sparkle shoes in my size. And I completely understand the feeling of "wasting" a new pair of running shoes when you won't be able to see them soon anyway, which is why I waited to order my super fierce pink and orange Nike Frees until I popped the baby out. Yeah boyyyy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. oh my goodness i love me some kiddo feet! i hate feet but kid feet is so stinking adorable!!

umm I hate when a company oversteps on bloggers over and over again. I refuse to buy from that point on because they are buying way too many people to like the product.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So I already know how much in love you are with Nuun, but I figured I'd let you know that they make a natural version without the sorbitol. This is the only version I use, mainly because the whole product has less manufactured ingredients. If I wanted that, I'd drink blue gatorade. No stomach issues at all, but FYI in case you are watching caffeine intake with the pregnancy, they have a chai flavor that does have a small amount of caffeine in it, in case you are tempted to try.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Polyethylene glycol, one of the ingredients you listed in Nuun, is also the same ingredient in the laxative Miralax.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Finally! Thank you for this. I tried Nuun when I heard so many people raving about it and it made me hit the bathroom 5 times during my long run. It was the worst experience ever and I didn't figure it out until I read the ingredients. Sorbitol is the devil. I'm so sick of hearing about Nuun now. Plus it tastes awful. Give me lemon-lime gatorade any day. I'll have to try Nathan's. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I never could get on the nuun bandwagon (people love that shit) but then i saw artificial sweetners and i was OUT. i like some purple frost gatorade every now and then, but haven't earned much more than water lately. I will put Nathan on my list to try.
