Our typical evening

In case you've ever wondered what a typical evening looks like in our house, I've decided to give you a  tour into the insane asylum that is our house.

We eat dinner at 6pm (toddlers and old people have the same dining time preferences) and then these exact things happen almost every night:

I just can't resist doing this

Mommy, Peanut STOLE MY BLANKET!

PEAAAAAAAAANUT! GIVE IT BACK!

Victory is mine!

I just wanted what is rightfully mine.

Now I can catch up on my reading!

You are raising a spoiled diva. That blanket was mine first.

The plot in this tale makes it a real page turner.

Time to go on adventures with SPELLING!

I wonder if this locally grown AND organic like I demanded?

I guess I'll eat it anyway.

For clarification, that blanket isn't even a blanket, it's a Brookstone Snuggie rip-off (is it a rip-off if it's more expensive than the original?) and it's supposed to be mine. I got to use it for a while until Peanut claimed it (this was before Faith was around) and after she slept on it for hours, it smelled like dog and I started to avoid using it and it pretty much became her blanket. Peanut gets deeply attached to fleece things, so I wasn't shocked and it helped her calm down and go to sleep, so I didn't really care either.

A few months ago, Faith decided that it was HER blanket and now she won't let Peanut touch it. Faith freaks out if she can't find the blanket downstairs, so I have to wash it at night or during nap time, but she only wants it if she's downstairs (she has other special blankets in her crib). I know I shouldn't laugh, but it's so funny to see the dog and kid both trying to claim a stupid piece of pink fleece. In case you were wondering, Faith always wins.

Faith always watches an episode of Super Why before bed because it's her new favorite thing in the world. Sure, some people are all "Blah, blah, TV is bad for kids, blah, blah" but she started liking this show and within a week, she knew the whole alphabet. I shit you not, she went from knowing no letters or numbers at all to this in a week:

Yeah, she's a genius and yeah, she farts loudly at the 40 second mark. I'm proud on so many levels.

Did you have a special blanket when you were little? I never had a blanket, but I had a teddy bear. I think the stuffed animal is better because it's more portable, but blankets are easier to wash so maybe it's even.

  1. My wife *still* has a special blanket. Seriously. She sleeps with it every night and takes it with us when we travel. It's gross. :)

    1. At least she has her street cred of being able to kick your ass to keep her from feeling embarrassed about it.

  2. Ok, that alphabet thing is AWEsome. We need to take all our kids out of school and make them watch that show. Close down the schools!

    1. I want to watch this show, but for other languages. I could be so worldly.

  3. Your kid is a genius!! Charlotte only knows how to do the Hot Dog Dance. I had a blankie for a while, but I think I stopped around age 6. I still love blankets though, but have lost many due to a dog that loves to chew them.

    1. Peanut doesn't chew stuff, unless it's food. Otherwise she just cuddles. :)

  4. Holy Crap! I am going to find that show! My little one isn't so great on recongizing his letters. Love it!! He does Leap Frog (and his former sitter did preschool lessons)and it's helped but that video was awesome!

Blankie? No. But I sucked my thumb for a loooooong time. When I would suck my thumb I would play with the seams in my clothes or on blankets or whatever I had. I still do the seam part to this day.

    1. It's a PBS kid's program! I know they air it at 10am and 4pm on Sprout (which I think is included on basic cable and Direct TV).

  5. My son learned the alphabet and all the sounds of the letters from a LeapFrog video. TV for kids can be pretty awesome. I don't remember ever having a blanket, but both my kids do. Avery's is a blanket that was a down quilt throw that I had before I even met my husband. It no longer has any feathers left in it.

    1. I'm crying for you having to clean up all those feathers as they leaked!

  7. That blanket sure gets around! I don't remember if I had one, but I have a special pillow now is that wrong? Now if I could just take it to work with me...

    1. A pillow is a just a stuffed animal that requires some imagination, right?

    2. as long as it's not one of those body pillows that you treat as a surrogate boyfriend. That's just weird.

  8. If I pretend it's educational, mommy will let me throw stuff from the bathtub all over the floor. Win.

  9. Faith is a genius! That blanket routine is hilarious, sorry to laugh at her clear distress.

I did not have a special anything. But the B is very attached to her stuffed cow. She picked it out at a store and would not let go. Once we saw how attached she was we bought another one that we rotate in. One lives in the car and the other in the house. I dread the day she realizes they aren't one and the same. For now cow is magic and just appears where ever she is :).

  10. That's crazy that Faith knows the alphabet already! And I had a blankie... And I still sleep with it. It's my comfort, I don't care if I'm 23 years old. My mom couldnt wash my blankie either. I have pictures of me sucking my thumb and holding my blankie when it was hanging on the line. And I was like 5, it wasn't last week, I swear!

  11. Those pictures of Faith stealing the blanket from Peanut are priceless. And then she farted. This post is awesome.

I had a big stuffed bear when I was a kid. I think he's actually still in my parents' basement. I loved that bear.

  12. I had a rag...I guess my parents were too cheap for an actual blanket so they gave me a burp rag. I've kept the tradition going apparently since Claire won't go to sleep without one now. She throws out the soft stuffed bunny I was so excited to get her and picks the rags. Sigh.

We don't have cable so as a result the girls don't "watch tv" I do occasionally watch lots of Buffy or cooking shows through hulu/netflix and Claire loved Dancing with the Stars when we lived in a house with cable. I'm pretty sure Faith's alphabet skills are better than anyone on that Dancing show especially since the season we watched had a Kardashian on it ;P

    1. Faith won't watch any TV unless it involves music, so she'll watch DWTS for the actual dancing parts, but none of the blah blah blah parts. :)

  13. I don't get attached to inanimate objects. Bungee, however, is obsessed with her fleece. When she starts carrying it around like Linus, I'll be concerned.

Have you tried giving Peanut a new fleece?

    ReplyDelete

    1. If I gave Peanut another blanket, then Faith would have TWO blankets she insists on dragging around. Even if the house was covered in fleece, they'd still be fighting over what the dog was trying to lay on that moment.

  14. Avery was playing with toys when I checked my google reader and the second I started playing Faith's video, she came over and wanted to see. That is the longest she has ever sat at my desk. Maybe Faith has a future making her own shows!

  15. I've had kids go through all of first grade and not know as many letters as Faith. Well done.

    1. but you're in baltimore, right?

      That explains a lot.

Although, compared with southern MD, i'm not sure.

  16. Peanut's face is priceless. My dog back home has a fleece doggie bed she lays in. I wonder if Faith would like to get in on that fleece bed.

I say keep watching that show!! What a smart little girl. What is really impressive is that she has learned that its fun to actually feel your farts in water bubble form instead of just smelling them.

I can't wait for you to show this to all of Faith's boyfriends.

  17. I love Peanut's judging face.

I had a cat. No joke. she would follow me around everywhere (probably for food) and let me carry her, and slept in my bed every night. It explains so much.

  18. I love those books. I can recite the Going to Bed book from memory. And the Belly Button book is super cute too.

I had a old burp rag for my lovie when I was growing up. Til my grandma stole it from me. I swear, I had it then we visited her and it was gone. Life shattering stuff for a 4 year old. I'm obviously tarnished because of it. Addison has a Sally doll that is her love (that we've lost once and had to replace expensively from Ebay.)

  19. I eat dinner at 5:30 pm (sometimes earlier) - it's always us with the senior citizen's when we eat out.

I love the blanket meltdown, and love Peanut's facial expressions even more :)

  20. peanut gives the best stink eye.

i think i carried around a knitted blanket that eventually fell apart. obviously it didn't mean that much to me!

  21. I'm all about a little TV here and there. I think it makes you a normal human baby/being. And if Faith learned the alphabet from it, the haters can just go on and hate something else. Or Faith could just fart on them, because that fart in the tub was full of awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've never had a lovie, and only one of my kids ever obsessed about anything (her binkie and her Ariel doll). It's so funny that Faith and Peanut both fight over the blanket, love it! We eat super early almost every day, during the school year, and I love it. Way to go on the alphabet Faith, tv can be a good thing!

  23. Faith is a little genius! That video is too funny. Maybe we need to watch some Super Why. I used to be all anti-TV for kids, until I had one. Sometimes you just have to watch a little TV. As long as it's in moderation, I don't see the problem.

  24. I had a blanket until i got out of college. Then i think my mom burned it. Haha!

And dang, faith is one smart cookie!

  25. I had a blankie. I called it Bikida. It was my one and only and it quickly degenerated into a rag. My son still sleeps with the SIDS-safe monkey he had as an infant. He calls it Mr. Wawa. Fortunately he's not as attached as he used to be, because Mr. Wawa is VERY small and there were many stressful hunting trips for him. My daughter is a serial monogamist as far as stuffies goes. Right now, her one and only is Spot, a stuffed Dalmatian. But first she had Miss Duck, then Tommy Boy (a cat), and Polar Bear. I hope she's more restrained with men someday.
