Toddler Track Meet

Today started out with a miserably humid 3 mile stroller run outside, but we had storms midday that brought in cool air for the rest of the day. After Faith enjoyed a nutritious Lunchable (it's like these things were designed for toddlers), she crashed for a long nap while I ran 4 more miles.

Berries not normally included

Tonight was the last track night event for my running club and since it was nice out, Faith and I went to go help time and record splits. They did a 5000 meter event (a 5K) which required lots of volunteers since counting 12.5 laps for 15+ people isn't as easy as it seems in theory. I normally have to deal with Faith acting like velcro at these events, so I tried bringing a ball with us to see if that helped. Apparently that was the key for her go wild.

LADYBUG BALL!!!

Mommy! Fetch my ball for me!

Fine, I'll go get it myself!

Look at that form!

These track events are exhausting!

Just when I thought the ladybug ball was enough excitement, then there was cowbell.

Run bitches, run!

In theory, I was supposed to ring the bell when the runners entered their last lap, but Faith decided it would be more festive to just ring it randomly. I was worried she would annoy the runners, but then she lost her cowbell focus and decided to concentrate on forward rolls instead.

Or maybe she's trying to moon the runners?

So my two takeaways from track night:

1. Ladybug balls should always be included.

2. Running a 5K on a track looks so incredibly boring.

Maybe it's not so bad if you're running it, but it sure looked boring from the sidelines. I'm not a track runner, so maybe I'm biased. There were other events after the 2 heats of 5000 meters, but we had to leave to get home for toddler bedtime.

Maybe next year I'll actually come to track night to run versus just helping time. I don't know, I really prefer the lovely privacy of trail running when no one can see your suffering until the finish line. On the track, everyone can see your pain face for the whole time. If I ever want to get faster I should probably try actually running on a track, so it could happen.

Would you prefer to run a 5K on a track (completely flat, no chance of getting off course) or on a trail?

  1. you think a 5k track run is boring, yet you run way more than that on a treadmill each day?

    You so crazy!

    1. But I'm watching TV, that makes everything better.

  2. trail running for sure. Although only if I don't actually have a chance of getting of course. 1600 meters max on a track and only if a toddler is ringing a cowbell and calling me a bitch.

  3. I would definitely prefer the trail. I haven't been a fan of the track since I ran track in high school. To me it is incredibly boring. The treadmill is boring too, but watching tv makes it bearable for a few miles anyway.aybe if I owned my own I would get used to it, but I really just hate to be moving without actually moving.

  4. Ugh, definitely on trails! I can only handle interval workouts on a track...and even that only happens once in a great while.

For the record, I didn't know they still made Lunchables! I used to LOVE those things. My mom would only let us have them on special occasions but it was like heaven in a pre-packaged container. I'm buying one for lunch tomorrow.

    1. I consider going grocery shopping (like I did this morning) to be a special occasion. :) Faith loves picking out a "treat" to have when we get home and this is what she wanted today.

  5. Running on a track is boring as fuck in general.

  6. I do all my runs are on a track. It's gets boring after an hour. So my 12 mile run Sunday required a lot of personal motivation.

  7. Good thing that Stone Mill won't be on a track, so you won't get bored. I expect tomorrow's blog to be about how excited you are, now that you signed up.

    1. I need to work harder at warning people away from that.

    2. you must have forgotten that Ultra people are gluttons for punishment. So to make it less appealing, tell them that it was a lot shorter than advertised, and that half of it was laps around a neighborhood.

  8. Track workouts seem SO boring. I'd lose focus way before a 5k was done. Ooh look. A butterfly!

  9. I hate the track. Running track in high school scarred me for life. I can't not sprint on them. I ran a half marathon that ended on a track and it was great. Even though I didn't have much left in the tank, I could sprint because I had to!

I would have scrapped the timing and played with Faith. She looks like she's having way more fun.

  10. I like the track for speedwork, but I don't know about a 5K - that's a lot of laps. I'd still choose that over the treadmill though. Who won the race?

  11. i had to run the 5k in college on the track, ugh, that is why i hated college track but loved trail races for cross country. btw, your blog makes me laugh every day, i love it but am terrible about commenting. also, please exscuse the all lowercase. i am typing while holding my baby and the caps are too much effort!

  12. Trail definitely. I'm not pretty when I'm tired. Also, I would hate seeing all the runners at once. I like being able to just focus on the few that I can see ahead of me.

  13. Lunchables are designed for toddlers AND adults, right? Right? Because I love those things. :)

That's really cool that your running club puts on track meets! And, you can never have too much cowbell!

  14. I prefer cowbell to both trails and tracks :)

  15. Normally I would say anything is better than the track, but before I had my Garmin I loved running on a track so I could know the exact distance I was running. I think 5k on a track would be fast enough that you wouldn't get TOO bored.

  16. Pretty sure I don't even have to answer your question of the day.

  17. I have nothing to say about running on a track since I haven't run on one (other than in one race for only one loop) since high school, but I do have to tell you that your post actually made me have tiny Faith-sized tears. Those pictures are so dang cute and reminded me of my own daughter at the age. That's the only hair style mine wore for a solid year (she's hair-challenged) but just the way she's plopped down in the grass and then looking through her legs brought back memories I'd forgotten that I'd forgotten. And now my daughter is 4 1/2 and suddenly a big kid and wah! Why does it go so fast.

Sorry, carry one with your running talk.

(Note: my uterus would like to apologize for taking over my mind and typing fingers for this comment. Sometimes, it just can't be stopped)

  18. A 5K on a track IS boring! Mile repeats suck too.

I will always prefer the trail over the track.

  19. Ugh, I can't imagine a whole 5k on the track... they're long and miserable enough on the road... but at least they had Faith to entertain them. She's adorable!

  20. I can't decide if the picture of Faith's somersault means she is going to be a great gymnast or a linebacker. I'm going with gymnast, cause of the Olympics.

Speaking of Olympics, I am pretty sure "Ball Throwing and Parent Retrival" is one of the events in the Toddler Olympics.

  21. Trail running is my favorite - but I won't lie - I did 5 miles on the track tonight to take some road pressure off the calves. I was so bored I played character assassination the entire time.

  22. I have the solution to your apellatory conundrum. Call the progenitive lump "Faith Junior". Genius! Very American, to have a junior.

Unless, that is, you think "Faith" isn't a good name?

  23. Although, in honor of another great American tradition, you could call your new kid by a nice set of initials. How about UPL? Hey, UPL, it's dinner time. Come here UPL!

(For Unappellatized Progenitive Lump, of course.)

  24. Avery needs a ladybug ball!

I agree - races on a track seem boring to me!
