Worth it

When we bought our house, there were a few things about it that we didn't like, but no house is perfect and everything we don't like is fairly cosmetic. Our house is primarily carpeted, with fluffy, cheap, WHITE carpet. On the day we moved in, Peanut ran in the house and promptly peed on the carpet (to mark her new territory?) and even though I cleaned it up right away and used fancy rug cleaning products, it still left a stain. At that point, I knew we were screwed.

Our living room is a high traffic area and lately the carpet has looked really awful. Peanut has had seizures in that room (which involves a wide splatter zone) and Faith drooled everywhere when she was endlessly teething. I had no idea that baby drool could stain carpet, but consider this your public service announcement: baby drool is like acid for white carpet.

My husband was hesitant to replace the carpet because we still have the dog with seizures and a toddler who is a force of nature (not to mention the new baby too) and he was worried it would get ruined. As you can tell, I won the battle of when to get new flooring, but it was hard to argue against the need to get rid of that disgusting carpet.

Behold!

To say that I'm excited is an understatement

We are going to put down an area rug to make it more toddler play friendly, but it isn't here yet. I find it mind boggling that I can order a 38lb rug on Amazon with free 2 day shipping. My UPS guy must love me so much.

I thought today would be a long day with a toddler with no internet or TV (plus it was raining outside), but it ended up being fine. We took Peanut to doggie day care so the workmen could do their job without getting licked constantly. Peanut had an action packed day of this:

Just looking at these pictures gives me a headache from the barking

Peanut is in love with this dog

Gee, how did our carpet get so gross?

Faith and I spent the morning reading books and hanging out. She was surprisingly accepting of my fib that the TV was "broken" and we'd have to "wait for Daddy to come home and fix it".

I know Mommy can't figure out those cables to save her life

By some miracle, they finished up the flooring just in time for toddler nap time. While Faith napped, I did 4 miles of fast incline walking on the treadmill. In the past few weeks, my knees have been really sore after I run so I'm trying to not run more than 2 days in a row. I know my body is just complaining about the extra weight, but I want to play it safe. I only  have 2-3 weeks left before having this baby, so I should be able to find enough patience to smart for that long.

That's right, just walk away

If you could renovate one thing in your house, what would you pick? Now that I have my new floors, I'm going to have to find something new to dream about changing.

  1. I don't want to change anything about my house. I love it! I would however, get a new bed. I hate our bed. It's like a rutted road with sagging where I sleep, a hump in the middle and a sag where my husband sleeps. It sucks. I just can't wrap my brain around buying a $2000 mattress. Guess that's what you get for thinking a $700 king size mattress was a good deal.

    1. We have a Sleep Number and it's pretty sweet...after you get past the sticker shock of the price :)

    2. Our sleep number bed is almost 12 years old.. still working great!!! So very worth it! (But I've heard that the queen sized is a bit on the odd side... so king is the way to go!)

  2. The floors look amazing! I want a bathroom with a HUGE soaker tub. Sigh. That is when I will know I have made it. :)

    1. Haha you will be upset to know that we have a huge soaker tub and we're considering ripping it out since we have never once used it (well, I used it for ice baths) and we'd like a bigger shower :)

    2. Ditto on the tub. We have one and the kids have used it twice. Soaked my entire bathroom. It's even like a whirlpool. Sounds awesome, but not so much.

  3. The new floor looks great! We have laminate flooring in our entryway and den and tile in the kitchen and laundry room which is perfect since these are the rooms where we spend most of our time and where the dogs go.

I wouldn't change anything about our house but I would love a new bed!

  4. My front porch. I would replace the rotting posts & railing with columns & vinyl. If I had extra cash, I would put grey stonework on the inner porch area to add character.

  5. I 100% plan on getting wood floors next year, I am with you that is the thing I would fix over and over again! yours look beautiful!

  6. My dream was to have the basement finished and 6 years later it's almost done. I wouldn't mind some new counters in my kitchen. The back splash is coming apart from the wall and it turns out that's the one thing that Gorilla Glue cannot hold.

    1. A back splash? That's a level of fancy we haven't achieved yet.

  7. Oh my gosh! The new flooring looks great! That's what I would like to do in our living room. The carpet in our house is pretty cheapo and everything little stain shows.

I'd also like to finish our basement and put a deck on the back. That's what we get for buying a brand new house and thinking we can get everything done in a short amount of time!

    1. When we bought our house, the deck didn't even have stairs to the ground. Who builds a deck with no stairs??

    2. was it just open for you to fall off, or was it completely railed off?

  8. I think it's telling that faith has no problems believing that you are too dumb to fix the TV.

  9. Thanks to the unbelievable price tag of medical school the husband, devil cat and I still rent. If I could change anything about our apartment it would be the shiteous textured walls. They are unbelievably dated and the whole place would look 20 years younger with some normal, smooth paint.

  10. I have wanted to fix the kitchen for a long time but that will cost a crapload of money which we do not have. We are going to get a new mattress for Christmas this year.

  11. I'd have a house to renovate. Studio apartments just aren't all they're cracked up to be.

  12. The floors look so much better! Our house is still new enough that I'm happy with it. Plus, I really can't be bothered to undertake any DIY projects. Not my style.

  13. The floors look amazing!! The only thing that drives me nuts about hardwood is that you can see all the dust and dog hair.

First, I'd like a house to renovate. For our apartment, I'd love a bigger bed. We have a full size bed right now...not big enough.

  14. Looks great and so much easier to clean! We've slowly replaced all the flooring and many other things in our builders standard house too. Tile and hardwood floors are my friends. One rug isn't so bad for the UPS man, ours loved me the day they delivered 9 dog crates, also with free 2 day shipping from Amazon!

  15. I would love to burn down my kitchen and start again, but since we aren't made of money, I'm going to just replace the hardware and repaint.

Those new floors are totally worth it. Looks awesome.

  16. The hardwood looks fantastic! My parents took out all the main floor carpets and switched to hardwood a few years ago and every time I'm there I can't get over how great it looks. I'd love to magically renovate this apartment into a house. That would be sweet. An already decorated house would be even better.

  17. It looks so good! I desperately want to do the same but I haven't convinced my husband yet.

  18. I love the hardwood! Someday I'd love to do that to my house too. I mean, who decides carpet in a dining room is a good thing?! Assholes. The carpet I have is pretty stained, but thankfully it's cheap brown carpet instead of cheap white carpet. They put white carpet in my brother's house, too. I don't understand it.

  19. Love the floors! Do you have a swiffer? If not, get one right away - they are the best.

If I could change anything about my house, it would be the kitchen. It needs to be bigger if I want my marriage to last more than 6 years.

  20. I'm so jealous of your new flooring. We have the nasty white carpet, and with 2 hounds and my general clumsiness it's filthy. Hardwood floors are on our wish list. Yours look great!

  21. I would definitely change the kitchen in my apartment. The current set-up is a bit ridiculous as the one piece of countertop (about the size of a suitcase) is around the corner from the stove and sink. Who puts a wall between the counter space and the stove?

Your new floors look fabulous. Just wait until Faith discovers "ice skating" across them in her socks.

  22. Beautiful! You are going to love the new floors! If I could change anything, it would be to get hardwoods downstairs. With 2 dogs and 2 boys, it is pretty disgusting at this point. Someday:) I love the pics of Peanut! That last one with the foaming mouth is hilarious. I can tell he is having a blast!

  23. Your new floor is lovely! I'm jealous over here. We have nasty carpet. Whenever my parents visit, they bring their dogs. The little one is 17 years old, blind, and deaf. Plus he is passive agressive and shows his anger by peeing all over the carpet. After numerous attempts to clean the carpet, it STILL smells like pee in certain spots. Don't you want to come visit? :)

    1. There is a cleaning product called "Nature's Miracle" that will get rid of that smell! It does shit for the stains, but it's great for odor :)

  24. we ditched our carpet too when we moved in! i love hardwood. yes, it was SO worth it.

  25. Peanut looks like she has rabies in that last photo! But at least the floor looks great! hehe Our new (to us) house has dark wood laminate throughout the kitchen/dining/foyer. I'm still trying to figure out how to clean it. I've given in to the fact that it always looks furry. I think the cat hair shows up on it more.

  26. We have hardwood under our carpet. The bank recarpeted the whole house before we moved in, so we're waiting for it to be thoroughly ruined before we rip it up.

What I'll never understand is how fucking water can stain a carpet.

  27. I have awful white carpet that my dogs have destroyed along with some serious projectile acid vomit from the baby. At least the downstairs is hardwood/linoleum. Actually, I hate the linoleum and want to replace it all with tile. I love my houe otherwise, though. Also, your dog is rabid.

  28. We got rid of our disgusting peed/puked/pooped on carpet and replaced with hardwood a couple of years ago. When the workers removed the carpet they felt the need to show us one area where the poop had gone through the carpet and padding all the way to the floor/subfloor/whatever you call it. The poop was from our parrot!

Anyway, I am now dreaming of expanding our shower into a very large tropical oasis...with a lock on it to keep kids at bay!

  29. Your living room looks great with the new floor. It's almost like you've revamped the whole room just by changing the flooring.

Peanut looks like he could have rabies in that second doggy daycare pic. Trust me I'm a vet (who hasn't practised in years in a country where there is no rabies - yep, I know what I'm talking about)
