My husband usually helps with bath time, so he gets to hear my random music selections and he made an interesting observation: "You sure like a lot of oldies". What? I don't listen to oldies! When I think "oldies" I think of things like this:
![]() |
Old, right?
But the song playing was "She's Crafty" by the Beastie Boys! That's not old! That's hip, right?

This just screams current
A quick Google search showed me that "License to Ill" actually came out in 1986...which does make it pretty old. Then I started thinking about how when the D.C. rock station (DC101) does "90s at Noon!" I'm always like "I LOVE this song! I haven't heard this in FOREVER! I was in high school/middle school when this came out!" about everything, just like an old person.
I think even my N'Sync stuff might be showing my age now (what? It's good running music!). Don't you miss this?

Some of the music that I like (especially for running) is what I'd call "old", like one of my favorites "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake (yes, I have horrible taste in music). However, most of it I considered to at least be mainstream and normal, but now I'm getting the impression that my music tastes aren't just lame, they are also old.
I've never been one of those people who is into a band before anyone has heard of it. You know the type, they look like this:
Someone way cooler than me, you can tell by the glasses
Or if you're a nerdy hipster, you'll like this:
If I haven't embarrassed myself enough in this post about my music tastes, I need to admit that the only current music that I've purchased in months has been country. I have a good excuse though: It's the kid's fault.
NOTHING IS EVER MY FAULT WOMAN
I can blame her because I never listen to the radio anymore because she watches The Wiggles in the car and when we are home, watching CMT music videos is her idea of a treat, so that's my only musical influence (other than songs like "The Big Red Car"). I even have Wiggles songs on my iPod...for the kid, yeah. For the kid.
Do you consider yourself to have good taste in music or are you embarrassed by the contents of your iPod like me?

So, yeah, I totally have all those songs in my iTunes library, with the exception of the Wiggles songs. I'm not "cool" like Kari either.
ReplyDeleteWow, that use of my picture is fitting. I listen to real oldies, like classic rock, but I also listen to indie rock and I did go to an underground concert last month. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteShe'll shape right up, once you start the new reign of terror:
ReplyDelete"Remember how Peanut got traded out for a stuffed dinosaur? That's what is gonna happen to *YOU* if you misbehave, or once your replacement can walk. So you better shape up fast."
Where's the South Park Chipotle video?
ReplyDeleteHere you go :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvIv77oQUng&feature=related
DeleteI listen to "emo" music....or as Jon calls it, "I want to kill myself" music. (I'm a geek). Jon's a country person, or as I call it "I had s*x with my cousin because the goat was out of town" (Is this too inappropriate? If so, please remove...). Peanut prefers The Wheels on the Bus"
ReplyDeleteBest comment of the day award :)
DeleteDid Faith learn that scowl from you? I must admit my ipod is full of country music, Faith and I might get along grandly. Although, there are some other things on there like Andrea Bocelli, the Bloodhound Gang, Chicago, and CW Mcall.
ReplyDeleteKara hasn't figured out how to remove inappropriate comments. That's why Brian and I post comments.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where my musical tastes came from, honestly. I love early 90s rock but since I was 3 when the 90s began I have no idea why. I always point out new, cool songs to Tim and then he tells me so and so won 4 Grammys so I haven't exactly "discovered them."
ReplyDeleteI'm always learning about music from other people... never discovering it myself. And yes, lots of old stuff! We can definitely blame the toddlers for this (hilarious Faith face!)
ReplyDeleteOh My Gosh...I love that look on her face!! TOO CUTE!!
ReplyDeleteLICENSE TO ILL was my first TAPE!! Ha Ha! I was 6 years old and my dad bought that for me...what was he thinking?! But I've loved them ever since!! SO Funny!!
I think Paula Abdul was my first tape :)
DeleteYes! Cold hearted snake, opposites attract. I had dance parties to that tape!!
DeleteDoing the single parent thing turned me into a total zombie this week, I hope I congratulated! Congrats on the new wee one on the way,
ReplyDeleteI tend to listen to CBC during theday, which maybe your equivalent to NPR, lots of talk about politics and world events, they ignore and I'm blissfully happy,
As for music, I'm the worst mommy Evah. I listen to my music. My kids rock out to Neil young, bob Dylan, Lenord cohen and hard core rap stuff, which is my sons fav.
Their new fav song is pumped up kicks, they do hip wiggles and all.
They don't know of the wiggles of Barney etc,and my brain is so much happier!
I love that your son prefers rap, too funny!
DeleteYou only have The Wiggles on your iPod because you are in love with the "hot" one. My Spotify playlist is a little embarrassing, so I won't mock you too much. No country, though. Crap, does having a baby mean I have to start listening to The Wiggles and country?
ReplyDeleteYes, Charlotte told me she likes Tim McGraw the best already.
Delete1. you're not old, you're like a baby. with a baby.
ReplyDelete2. that hipster person looks weird. Like she's fat or something, maybe even has a disfigured thumb, even though it doesn't show in the photo.
3. country music has no excuse for existing. It's just wrong, and you're screwing up faith for life. How do you expect her to function in society with that gigantic head and a love for country music?
Everyone will be smaller than her and too afraid to make fun of her musical tastes.
DeleteI approve #3.
DeleteIt's not old...it's classic. Whitesnake? Classic. Journey? Classic.
ReplyDeleteAlso I love country music. Your kid rocks.
considering my post yesterday, i think you know the answer to that one!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this post. It is scary to think that Beastie Boys are "old" now, but I guess that's how it happens. I also think "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay", which my dad used to play on repeat when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteI almost never hear new music anymore either, mostly because I'm almost never in the car listening to the radio. Pandora helps, though. We listen to that when we make dinner and I always count on my much-more-hipster-oriented husband to pick a "cool" band to start a new Pandora station.
Faith is named after Faith Hill, DUH.
The name "Faith" just sounds better with a little twang! :)
DeleteYears ago, I was very into cool, unheard of indie music. Then, I got out of the graduated college with that useful recording industry/music business degree and lost it. Now, what I listen to is rather embarrassing as well! It's really bad when my husband and I mix up our mp3 players because they look the same - neither of us are happy!
ReplyDeleteMy husband hates my music so much I think it's actually painful for him. :)
DeleteI refuse to admit that 90s music is old. All of those songs sound completely current and normal to me. I probably would get embarrassed by my ipod, if I got embarrassed by those sorts of things - it goes from things like The Thong Song to old Broadway hits to Britney Spears. I like variety.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am definitely the person who knows a song/band long before it is heard on the radio. We got a subscription to XM radio a couple years ago. LOVE IT! I'm not a dirty hipster though.
ReplyDeleteI f'ing LOVE that Whitesnake song!! Did you hear it in that movie The Boxer? I have that song "AM Radio" on my Ipod and I love it when it comes on. When I run, I listen to a lot of rap music, I have no idea why but my brain likes it.
ReplyDeleteJustin Timberlake is gonne throw his back out if he keeps doing that thing with his crotch.
I used to listen to DC 101 growing up - glad to know it's still around. That station (literally) rocks! I'm pretty embarrassed by my Ipod selections - a lot of explicit rap that people would never guess I listen too :)
ReplyDeleteExplicit rap - such as Afroman? Yeah, that's on the list of stuff my husband makes me forward through whenever it comes on my iPod and he's with me.
Delete-AW
I LOVE License to Ill. That was one of the first albums I ever bought (on cassette tape.) My husband hates it.
ReplyDeleteNow that I know about 90s at noon, I may have to go sit in my car every day at lunch to listen to it.

And RE being embarrassed by my iPod, I was once recently. I have quite the wide range of genres on it. I usu turn my radio down as I put my down to hand the guard my ID at the gate. My ancient car with it's ancient radio decided to play the volume opposites game a few days ago. As I turned my radio "down", the volume went "up", and then the guard and everyone near me at the game knew that Justin Timberlake was planning to bring sexy back.

(I'm so glad NMCI is letting me read your blog at work again, btw!)
ReplyDeleteHey, the songs you listed are songs I like...so, what does that say about me? I love Hipster Gandolf. I like a wide range of music from classic rock to pop and rap, but mostly "mainstream" stuff. (I of course think it's good taste).
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of music from middle school now being "oldies" -- how about shows from when we were younger now being on Nick at Nite??
I listened to country pre-baby...that makes me more pathetic, right?
ReplyDeleteBut, I prefer current pop stuff to 80's and 90's stuff, so I at least win there! WINNING! :P
I'm proud of my bad taste in music. I still listen to Britney, Backstreet, and N sync. And sometimes I listen to Disney channel stars like Hanna Montana and Cheetah Girls. But that's a secret!
ReplyDeleteI have very eclectic musical tastes, they range from Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to Beatles and Jethro Tull and everythig in between. I'm not embarassed, I just think it makes me quirky.
